Superheroes like DIY TV’s Supergirl Top Halloween 2016 Costume Picks for Children
We predicted last year that the television version of the empowered female superhero, Supergirl would be a popular DIY costume when the television show debut last fall on CBS. The redesigned costume from Oscar-winning designer Colleen Atwood is more empowering and much more wearer-friendly for a variety of different body-types than past versions have been.
Now showing on the CW channel, Supergirl’s popularity is continuing, especially as inspiration for a 2016 Halloween costume.
Superheroes Topple Princesses
According to the recent NRF’s Halloween Consumer Top Costumes Survey for 2016, this year more children of both genders want to dress up as their favorite action or superhero for Halloween. Princesses, the most popular generic costume for the past 11 years, came in second. Not to be too dismayed, Frozen Characters—Elsa, Anna and Olaf—were seventh.
Television’s wearer-friendly empowering Supergirl costume is an excellent superhero choice for girls of all ages. Melissa Benoist described what drives her character, “She’s all about hope and being good and kindness and doing the right thing, helping others.”
As a beacon of heroism, this rare television female superhero is strong, brave and kind—a role model not only for young girls, but for anyone.
The Costume Detective
We have created two separate pages filled ideas to make, modify or mash-up a crime-fighting, female action hero costume for girls and tweens, or teens and adults, depending on what size female you have who wants to dress up like her favorite television superhero.
The DIY versions can be pulled together with regular clothes like a royal blue top, a deep red skirt and red boots, plus a few accessories like the cape, belt and S Logo. The top, skirt and boots can even be work, without the S Logo, as a more ‘incognito’ empowering work outfit.
Supergirl TV Costume
If you don’t have the time for a DIY, Rubie came out with a custom Supergirl costume based on the television show which comes in three different versions. Just add some boots and your ready to fly.
